Laurel Reduction
Today our team were busy carrying out a Laurel reduction to a particularly overgrown specimen in the village of Glenfield near Leicester.
Its not uncommon for us to be called to manage Laurel hedges. They are a commonly planted species due to their attractive glossy green leaves, the speed at which they grow, and the fact they are evergreen and provide year round screening. What is overlooked however, is how quickly they can overtake your garden if not kept under control regularly.
How hard can you prune Laurel?
Unlike other evergreen hedges such as Leylandii, one of the great things about Laurel is how tolerant they are to harder pruning. If your Laurel tree or hedge is outgrowing its space then it is possible to prune it back to bare wood and it will regrow. This new growth if regularly trimmed will create dense foliage overtime. It can look stark when initially carried out but often it is the only way to get this particular hedge species back under control.
In the past when pruning overgrown Laurel hedges, we have recommended to the customer only hitting one side at a time. Subsequently pruning back the other side 2 years later after the hedge has recovered form its first prune. The beauty of this is that cover can be maintained, and whilst a longer period of time will pass, the finished result will be worth it.
